The Town of Hartsville was established on February 7, 1844. Hartsville is located on the western border of Steuben County with Hornellsville to the north, Canisteo to the east, and Greenwood to the south.
In 1830 Reuben Hart with son Charles N. Hart who became a prominent citizen came to this area. When the first post office was to be formed in 1844, Hartsville was named after him. Lumbering was the prime industry in the early days. At one time there were six saw mills in the town. Today Hartsville is known for it's secluded scenic beauty, with great hunting and Christmas tree farming.
