Jasper is located on Route 417 (old Route 17) in the southwestern part of Steuben County.
In 1807 Nicholas Prutsman came to this area. It is said that he and his family camped under an oak tree until he got a cabin raised.
Jasper Township was formed on January 24 1827. It was named for Sergeant Jasper, a hero at the battle of Fort Moultrie,South Carolina.
