Rexville is located in the township of West Union on Rt 248 in the
southwestern corner of Steuben County. Charles and Daniel Rexford built the first mill in
1849. There last name was the origin of Rexville. Almost all of the land was covered with
hardwood forests. Clearing this timber provided work for the first settlers, along with
making maple syrup from some of the maple trees that were left. The higher elevations
ranging from 2,000 to 2,400 feet above sea level found suitable for agriculture. Here
numerous dairy farms were developed.
