The Town of Erwin located in the Southern Tiers having the Village of Painted Post and the
hamlets ofCoopers Plaines and Gang Mills along with the hamlet
of Erwins pictured here at the Erwin Addison Exit of Rt 15. In the very early summer of
1786, Samuel Harris I made the first settlement west of the pre-emption line. It was the
first habitation for civilized man in Western New York. He took a cargo of goods up the
Chemung to open trade with the hunting parties of the Six Nations which resorted at
certain seasons. Later, he moved to Painted Post and then to Pennsylvania.
The Town of Erwin was organized and the first election was held March 7,1826. Sam Erwin
was the first Supervisor.
