West Cameron is a hamlet in the Township of Cameron, located in the southern part of Steuben County on Route 417 (old Route 17). West Cameron is situated in the rugged and scenic Canisteo River Valley, extending through hills famous for deer hunting. Because of the proximity of the railroad in the early days, the hamlets of Cameron and West Cameron were stockyards. Surplus cattle from the surrounding area farms could be held and loaded for shipment to slaughter houses in the metropolitan area of the east.
